Guatemala is a very small country (108,890 sq. km.) but very complex in many ways including its geography, ecology and culture. In general its geography is divided in four main segments: Southern coastal plain, volcanoes, mountains and flat plateus of the north. Ecologically it has 14 life zones that go from very wet cloud forests with more than 6,000 mm of rain a year to thorn forest with less than 500 mm of rain. Altitudes include the widest range in Centralamerica with the tallest point above 4,200 meters above sea level in Tajumulco volcano. The government manages a wide conservation program called SIGAP (Guatemalan Protected Area System) through the National Council for Protected Areas CONAP. Guatemala's people are also very complex, having 24 official languages, being Spanish the main one (spoken by over 60% of its people). We also have 24 different ethnical groups, mainly of Mayan origin.
